Star Trek Coming Back to Television With New Series
CBS has just confirmed that anew Trek series is being developed and will debut in January 2017 on CBS before the rest of the series airs exclusively on CBS All-Access. The promised show will also be the first new series since the cancellation of Star Trek: Enterprise in 2005.
Alex Kurtzman (co-writer of the 2009 “Star Trek” movie and the sequel “Into Darkness”) is reportedly working on the project at CBS Television Studies as the Executive Producer, and the search for a writer is already underway.
From the press release by CBS: “The brand-new ‘Star Trek’ will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966. The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film “Star Trek Beyond,” which is scheduled to be distributed by Paramount Pictures in summer 2016.”
When asked to comment on the news, Star Trek: Axanar’s Executive Producer, Alec Peters, raised an eyebrow and said: “Fascinating.”
