R2-KT to Appear in “The Force Awakens”
In a personal statement released from Albin Johnson he revealed that R2-KT, the pink astromech droid donated to Johnson for his daughter, did indeed make it past the editing room and will appear in the upcoming movie “The Force Awakens”.
“Mary Franklin of Lucasfilm asked me to pitch the idea to Kathleen Kennedy (Lucasfilm President), and after hearing the story of our pink ambassador of hope Lucasfilm requested we ship her off to London early last year. Quick repairs were made and off she went for six months,” Johnson says in his email. While he could not disclose just when we could expect to see the pink droid, he was assured that she will definitely appear.
Johnson, the founder of the famed 501st Legion fan group, received the droid after his daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2004. The girl’s name was Katie and the droid was named for her. Albin wanted a R2 droid to watch over his daughter while she slept and Katie’s older sister, Allie, came up with the idea to paint it pink.
While her droid was under construction, a substitute droid was shipped to her by a member of the R2 Builders Club complete with a pink makeover. Katie hugged the droid at first sight and it did indeed watch over her as she slept.
Katie passed away before her droid was completed, but R2-KT lives on in her name and memory, travelling to fundraisers, visiting children that have been hospitalized, and Star Wars events across the United States. Although the droid already appeared in an animated film of “The Clone Wars”, R2-KT in the “flesh” will be immortalized on the big screen for the biggest movie of the decade.
Somewhere, deep in the Force, Katie Johnson is smiling.
