Lucasfilm Requests Fan Groups Leave the Blasters at Home
Rumors have been swirling that Lucasfilm has demanded (or ordered) that the Rebel Legion, Mandalorian Mercs, and the 501st Legion “disarm” and leave their blasters at home.
“Absolutely not,” says Albin Johnson, Founder of the 501st Legion, along with 501st Leadership.
“They have made a formal request, but demand? No way,” he continues. The request came from the Lucasfilm Fan Relations Group, but Albin emphasized to me that there was no “order” given.
In an official statement from Lucasfilm, they said: “We are respectfully requesting that the display of prop weapons, specifically those that look like guns (including holstered guns), not be used for character appearances which have been requested by Lucasfilm, Disney, or our partners. For event appearances not requested by Lucasfilm, Disney or our partners, we would prefer this request be respected but will leave it up to the members’ discretion to decide how they’d like to proceed.”
“They (Lucasfilm) love the fan groups; they’re advocating for us,” he says. “But we all have to be careful.”
Recent events in Paris have led movie theaters to step up their security efforts when “The Force Awakens” debuts in December. Now Lucasfilm has made a formal request that fan groups not bring blasters to official events for the foreseeable future.
“We’re not going to audit any of the garrisons to see if they comply with the request,” Albin affirmed. “And Lucasfilm isn’t going to be checking up on us to see either. It’s a request only.”
While no timeline has been set as to when the fan groups can “lock and load” again, it appears that this request is only temporary.
“This request was not made out of fear,” Albin said as a personal statement to Geeks Speak. “We just want everyone to use common sense and be safe in these sensitive times.”
