Could Civil War Down The Avengers At Box Office?

Captain America: Civil War is tracking for a massive domestic opening of $175 million-plus at the North American box office, where it opens May 6. Although there are some people who believe it could approach the heralded $200 million club.

If tracking is correct, Captain America 3 is set to score the fifth-best opening of all time, or better. To date, the four top openings belong to Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million), Marvel’s The Avengers ($207.4 million) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million).

Captain America 3, written by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, sees the Avengers fractured into opposing factions when the government wants to intervene; one led by Captain America and the other by Iron Man.

The movie has received strong reviews so far, and currently sports a 94 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The ratings from critics are on pace to be triple that of Batman V Superman.
