Axanar Executive Producer Clears Air About CBS/Paramount Legal Issues
Recent reports have surfaced to show that “Star Trek: Axanar” has avoided legal issues, but that CBS and Paramount have objected to the popular fan film being made. Alec Peters, the Executive Producer of the project, was able to answer a few questions for us to help clear the air about what was really going on and if they were facing any legal ramifications.
GS: What one word could you use to summarize the entire Axanar experience from the very beginning to this point?
I have been amazed at the passion with which fans have taken to Axanar and carried the flag for us.
GS: According to a report from The Wire, CBS and Paramount are somewhat less than pleased with Axanar for legal reasons. What steps have y’all taken to be complicit with them? Have y’all communicated with them throughout the project?
Alec: Well, those reports were all speculation. We actually met with CBS two weeks before those articles hit. And yes, CBS has told us they and Paramount are keenly aware of Axanar, but they really can’t tell us what we can and cannot do for legal reasons. It is really crazy, as they are trying to protect their rights, but they are doing so by not doing anything! But we have communicated with them and are trying to do our best to minimize the Star Trek IP we use. We don’t use the words “Star Trek” anymore, and we don’t use things like the Delta Shield symbol. I think CBS is trying their best to not do anything as long as we don’t step over the line. Of course they won’t tell us where that line is either. But if they did, the backlash from fans, already pissed off at the two previous JJ Star Trek movies, would be brutal. We have 1.5 million views on You Tube and fans are rabid about Axanar.
GS: Have you received any Ferengi-like emails or letters from them? (Meaning have they contacted y’all about revenue/royalties/etc)
Alec: No, not at all.
GS: The expectations are rising and the hype is building for Axanar. Is the pressure rising as well?
Alec: Not really, we have very high expectations for ourselves. And I kind of thrive on pressure. I just need more time!
GS: When did you have the most fun when working on Axanar?
Alec: Oh probably shooting Prelude to Axanar. But honestly, the premiere at comic con was amazing too. Feeling the fans love is always amazing!
